The city itself is an engine of the circulating mass of living - that is, a constantly evolving product of the current collection of active humans - but a constantly updating and immortal legacy of the deceased mortals that comprised it. As such, just as a snake sheds its skin, a city must shed the dead which no longer contribute to its continuance.
